From the Jean Renoir short: CHARLESTON PARADE 1927
This rather strange Charleston is performed by French actress Catherine Hessling who was also Jean Renoir’s wife at the time. Also appearing is African American dancer Johnny Hudgins who often performed a blackface pantomime routine which became popular in both America and Europe in the 1920’s. In this routine he does some classic minstrel steps all of which is to say the least politically incorrect today. The background music consists of Tiny Parham’s 1929 recording of “Washboard Wiggles” and Jelly Roll Morton’s 1926 recording of “Steamboat Stomp”. I stretched the video out some so I could get almost all of both of these great old records in.
is that dude wearing blackface?
Is the slowed down dance in the original clip too or is it a recent change?
O, 300 years into The American Experiment
Holy dam and a Razamataz and all that jazz. This is the 1920's version of Twerking
