From the documentary: JAZZ 2000
Benny Goodman had them dancing in the aisles when he opened at the Paramount Theater in New York in 1937. The best part of this starts at about the 1:10 mark with the dancing. I really like the girls Truckin’ and doing the Shag among other things at about the 1:40 mark. Was this the first time teenagers danced in the aisles of a theater? I don’t know for sure.
Great clip – though I would have loved to have seen more 1937 footage (if it even exists) of the kids swinging out. The NY Times was outraged by this display, describing the unwholesome jitterbugging and kids "writhing orgiastically in their seats"!
I love the hats the men and boys are wearing.
